Awards

The “Green Business Innovation 2015” awards took place at the Chamber of Achaia on Thursday, June 18, 2015, the companies of the Region of Western Greece that participated in the contest awarded by the Greek Management Association (EEΔΕ) .

The competition was to bring small and medium-sized enterprises have adopted "best practices" for sustainable development of environmentally friendly products in the production and services.

The company "Tsachalos Green Trade SA" was awarded for contribution to green business but especially for its innovative hydroponic system "Fraoula Best" (www.fraoulabest.com) which is friendly to the environment and the employees.

Tropos Branding and DKG Consulting (members of DKG GROUP), the companies that installed, monitor and promote the system were there.

Mr. Christos D.. Katsanos - Branding Strategist of Tropos Branding Co thoroughly analyzed the value of the system "Fraoula Best" and its contribution to the Green Entrepreneurship.

The members of the Evaluation Committee were: Dr. Dimitris Skouras, Professor of Economics and Dean of the Faculty of Business Administration of the University of Patras, Dr. Basil Michalopoulos, Director of Rural Economy of the Region of Western Greece and Mr. Theodore Tsoumpelis, General Secretary of the Chamber of Achaia.

Location - Planting Season

a. Location: Cyprus and Greece as a representative part of the Mediterranean basin were the chosen location for the FraoulaBest solution. Although the knowledge of the hydroponic strawberries in Europe comes mainly from the North countries (England, Holland, Belgium, Poland, etc.), the Mediterranean countries have begun to take the lead. Already, Spain has become one of the biggest players in the production and marketing of strawberry motherplants.

b. Planting Season: October-November. These two months proved to be very important as it is competitive in the global market. The North countries during this period have shorter day length (in addition to low temperatures).

c. Harvest: December-June. The concept of earliness was decisive. The production per square meter depends not only by the controllable greenhouse conditions but also by the great harvest.

Certification on Integrated Crop Management

Integrated Crop Management is a quality management system in the primary sector that aims to produce safe and healthy agricultural products, without pesticide residues, with rational use of water and fertilizers, with completely controlled and recorded procedures, without disturbing the environment, and in compliance with the legal requirements and standards.

Obviously the FraoulaBest® solution follows the above principles. Apart, the FraoulaBest® solution has move forward to the certification of either on IPM standards (eg GLOBALGAP) or on Food Safety Management Systems (eg HACPP, ISO 22000).

Benefits of Certification
Under the prism that the producer is a BUSINESS MAN and the greenhouse is an ENTERPRISE that subjected to the same rules as other companies, it is understandable that any intervention in the factors of production can yield significant benefits to the enterprise.
Certification is synonymous with Brand. Certification aims to build the confidence between the supply chain and the consumers.

Implementation of Certified Management Systems on Quality, Safety and Environment constitute the win-win situation for those who involved in (Grower, Agronomist, Trader, Exporter, Retailer and Consumer) and can lead the product to the readability and proximity through the whole supply chain, achieving the desired added value.
Both DKG Group and Grodan are associate members of GLOBALGAP. All given Guidelines are according to corresponding protocol and follow the principles of Good Agricultural Practices.

Crop Management

Constructions:

Regarding the construction, the system was tested at:

• low tunnels with side ventilation to

• modern greenhouses with roof ventilation and cooling equipment.

• Inside the greenhouse support constructions made ​​for lifting the level of cultivation in order to achieve:

• better ventilation of the plantation
• increasing the planting density to greater productivity per square meter.
• fewer labor force since they work standing up and not bowed.

• At low tunnels was the culmination of a level while growing up in greenhouses with two levels of equipment suitable crop.

• The main condition was the placement of the substrate so as to drain freely

Planting densities:

 • In double crop level placed 26-28 plants/m2 ( 12-14 plants/substrate).

• In single crop level placed 16-18 plants / m2 (12-14 plants/substrate).
